¡Hola a todos!
Sé que este es un tema que ha sido tratado en otros muchos hilos, pero de unos a otros encuentro contradicciones o cuestiones poco claras. ¿Podría alguien, por favor, definir claramente cómo se diferencia en inglés una licenciatura de un máster y de un doctorado?
Supongo que depende del país y de ahí que haya tanto problema, pero me gustaría pensar que hay alguna clasificación que simplifique todo. Intento traducir mi currículum al inglés y no quiero dar lugar a confusiones.

    • Si tienes dudas específicas, será más fácil ayudarte. Si no, temo que acabaremos dándote las mismas "contradicciones y cuestiones poco claras" que antes, ya que hay tantas diferencias entre los sistemas académicos....
     
    Un licenciado obtiene un degree... una persona haciendo la tesis hace su Phd... y un Master normalmente se denomina igual... Master

    Eg: Un licenciado en Biología, Master en ecología hace su tesis en ecología de la reproducción del perro

    Degree in Biology, master in ecology and developing my Phd in breeding ecology of dogs...

    Así es, al emnos en el contexto científico...

    La licenciatura o "Bachelor's Degree" es un título que uno recibe después de estudiar 4 años (más o menos). Luego uno puede empezar a estudiar clases posgrado o "graduate studies" que incluye la maestría o "master's degree" y el doctorado o "doctorate".

    La "master's degree" normalmente incluye dos años más de estudio y uno tiene que escribir una tesis acerca de un tema relacionado con sus estudios. Esta tesis tiene que ser un tema particular y específico para que el profesor la acepte. Normalmente estas tesis no son muy largas que digamos. Yo diría que de 20 a 40 páginas en total, pero como no he estudio la maestría a lo mejor alguien tiene una mejor idea acerca de cómo es la tesis.

    El doctorado consta de 2 años más de estudio, generalmente, y hay que escribir una "dissertation", lo cual viene siendo casi un libro completo acerca del tema que el estudiante escoja.

    I haven't seen the other posts on this subject, so I don't know what they have said. I will attempt to lay it out here simply as it is usually is in the educational system in the United States. Note, there can be some variations of these, but generally this is how it is.

    A bachelor's degree [Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science] is a basic, four year university degree (this degree can be also earned at what we call in the U.S. a “college,” which is an institution that offers nothing higher than just such degrees).

    A master’s degree [Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MS), and others (perhaps the most well-known being the Masters of Business Administration (MBA)] requires an additional two years after the original bachelor’s degree.

    A doctorate degree is an additional four years after earning the original bachelor’s degree. Note: it is not necessary to earn a master’s degree before attempting to earn a doctorate.

    Jinti, sé que debería ser más específica en mis preguntas, pero pretendía que el post sirviera para futuros foreros y no vieran las respuestas limitadas a mi caso concreto ;)

    De todos modos, mi caso concreto es que dudaba cómo denominar a mi licenciatura, ya que en otro post vi que en función del número de años de estudio y de si se trataba de un titulo reconocido o no, se llamaba bachelor o master. Gracias a Gonzalo, Apathet y Santiago Jorge por solucionar mis dudas. Supongo que tengo un Bachelor :D (y un "unemployment" como una casa)

    The problem is that, here, the Licenciatura is more than a Bachelor but less than a Master, and so it's difficult to translate it without appearing yourself with more or less knowledge than you really have.

    Yes, that's exactly my issue. I studied 6 complete years at the University of Havana where I obtained a degree in German Language and Literature with English as Second Language "Licenciatura en Lengua y Literatura Alemanas con Segunda Lengua Inglesa" according to my diploma, and I've been struggling here in the US because they evaluated my transcripts as if I had a Bachelor Degree in Arts and Translation, which is not because I studied 6 years, not 4, at the university. It's different here and it's tough if you want to get a job according to your studies. :-S
