大家好!

I was looking up "license plate" in the dictionary recently and found both 汽车牌照 and 车牌照. Which one of these two terms is more common? (or are they about equally common?)
Thanks!

A number plate is literally a plate with a number (or numbers) on it, so '號牌' could work. However, in real life, it is often meant to refer specifically to a vehicle registration plate, which can be for either a car or a motorcycle, so '車牌' is what I would recommend.

'牌照' actually refers to the licence and not the number plate: '牌 (plate)' modifies '照 (licence)'.

Thanks for the clarification, Simon! :)
To Mainland Chinese: The terms 号牌 and 车牌 are also commonly used in Mainland, right?
