Source: In the Bedroom (2001), an American movie.

Choir Teacher Ruth Fowler describes her grief at her son's murder: It comes in waves and then nothing. Like a rest in music, no sound but so loud. I don't know what to do. I feel so angry!

Perhaps, this is a stupid question, but why is it loud if there's no sound?

I agree with Edinburgher. Sometimes a silence can be so obvious as the 'lack of something' and you are so aware of it that it is as if you are hearing it 'loudly'.
