Lisser à 2 mm d'épaisseur

I have often come across this in French recipes.

Does it mean that the cream/paste coming out of the piping bag should be 2 mm...I wonder how to interpret 'lisser' in this context.

Do you have to smooth it out until it's 2mm thick?

Keith, that is how I understand it, smooth it out to make it 2mm thick.
