Hello,

I am currently reading "The psychedelic experience" by Timothy Leary, and I met this sentence which is a bit obscur for me :
"Little wonder that psychologists, in the face of such complexity, escape into specialization and parochial narrowness."
So i tried to translate it into french and here is my translation :
"Il n'y a pas a s'étonner que les psychologues, face à une telle complexité, se réfugie dans la complexité et dans l'étroitesse d'esprit d'un épicier."

The end is a bit strange, I confess, but I didn't know what else to put.
Could you help me ?
Thank you for every replies.

    My try:

Ca n'est guère étonnant que les psychologues, devant une telle complexité, se réfugient en divers spécialisations et autres querelles de paroisse

    I hope it helps!

"Little wonder that psychologists, in the face of such complexity, escape into specialization and parochial narrowness."

"Il n'y a pas a s'étonner que les psychologues, face à une telle complexité, se réfugie dans la complexité et dans l'étroitesse d'esprit d'un épicier."
It doesn't look right that you have complexité two times in your translation. The subjects escape from complexity to something simple and more narrow.

yes, thank you for putting your finger on my mistake, nouvellerin. I should have written : "Il n'y a pas a s'étonner que les psychologues, face à une telle complexité, se réfugie dans la spécialisation..."
Anyway, I wasn't looking for an exact translation but for an explanation and you were all very kind to answer me.
So, if I have understood : "parochial narrowness" could be synonymous with "not taking the time to look further".
If i'm still wrong, thank you for correcting me.
    Otherwise, thanks !

For me "parochial narrowness" means "étroitesse d'esprit" that's why I used a periphrasis that I should have completed by "mesquines querelles de paroisse" or "mesquines querelles de chapelle" (mesquines querelles = petty quarrels) which are a sign of parochial narrowness
(I used "paroisse" or "chapelle" to stick to the religious vocabulary that I thought "parochial" belonged)
For "querelles de chapelle" go to http://forum.wordreference.com/showthread.php?t=37575
