longest-running festival

A quick chat with a local informed me that this area becomes very lively in early March with the Melbourne Waterfest. This is Melbourne's largest and longest-running festival.


Should I interpret "longest-running" in the above as "oldest" or longest-lasting?" Thanks.

    Yes, I'm afraid it could. There is no way to determine from this sentence which is meant. For that matter, it is also not possible to determine what is meant by "largest." The most participants? Occupying the largest space? The most visitors? The most expensive? You would need to ask a Melbournion (Melbournite? Melbourniana?) what he understands of this festival.
