lose track of the finer, imperishable points of the soul

Hi there
A mother is talking about her motherhood and her love for her daughter.

"Now I better understand why mothers appear so often in stories as saints or as monsters. We are not human in the ordinary sense, at least not when our children are very small. We become monsters of care, inexorable, and if we occasionally lose track of the finer, imperishable points of the soul while ministering to the fragile body, that can'r be helped."

Please explain to me the meaning of the bold one for me to understand. What is fine, imperishable soul?

Thanks

Roughly, this means: If we sometimes forget the better qualities of our minds and characters while we are taking care of our bodies, that can't be helped.

Well, Banana UK, I didn't make it any shorter, but I did change a few words. :)
