Lost the connection

Hello,

I am on the phone with my friend.

For some reason, I can’t hear her. Afterwards, can I say I lost you? I lost the connection?
What can I say?

Thank you

  • "I lost you' and "I lost the connection" both work for me. In the U.S. we also often say, "The connection was dropped" or "the call must have been dropped" in the case of a cellphone call.

I think if you use "cut off," you have to refer to one side or the other, not both -- i.e. not "we," but either "I" or "you" got cut off.

Really? I've heard and used both:

In a hotel, back before direct dialing from rooms was the norm, I might have said, "Operator? I got cut off!"

But if I'm talking on the phone to a friend and the line goes dead (not unusual where I live, though better in recent years) I might call back and say "Sorry, we were (or got) cut off." I don't see a problem with it. Your mileage may vary.
