lot - improve our lot within that abode

Kofi Annan said in 1997: "The environment is where we live; and development is what we all do in attempting to improve our lot within that abode. The two are inseparable."
I guess I get the point, but: What does "lot" exactly mean in this context? My tries: improve our living, improve our pass/passage.

I would gloss 'lot' as either 'destiny' or 'allowance', the latter having connotations of destiny, when you ask yourself who's dishing out the rations.

lot: "2. portion in life; destiny; fortune: it falls to my lot to be poor"
