low farm gate prices

Hi!I am translating a technical report about paddy rice farming in Sri LAnka and there is a sentence I don't understand:
Apparently unaware of the many channels involved before the rice reaches the consumer, the farmers look at the low farm gate prices they receive their paddy, compare it with the prevailing retail prices of rice in the market.
What does the underlined part mean?
My attempt:

Does it make sense?.I don't think so...
Thanks

The 'farm-gate price' is the price the farmer himself receives for his rice, as he sells it to the first dealer in the supply-chain. Figuratively, the price he gets for the produce as it leaves through the gate of his farm.
