The Big Bang Theory Season 08 Episode 04

Howard: I didn’t think you’d make it.
Raj: Why not?
Howard: Well, ’cause you have a steady girlfriend now, and we assumed you’d have to stay home to lower the food down to her in the pit.

What's the meaning of pit here?

This is a reference to the movie The Silence of the Lambs in which a serial killer kept women in a pit (big hole) in his house.

They are saying that the only way Raj could have a girlfriend is if he was keeping her against her will in a pit.

This seems to be an allusion to a scene from a horror movie where a serial killer has imprisoned a victim in a pit (a scene which has been satirized in the show "South Park" using approximately the words you've quoted). The upshot is that the speaker is making a joke about how Raj treats women.

    Thank you all.
    Got it.
No, no - I understand why you might think this is the case, but this comment isn't about how Raj treats women. It's about how desperate Raj is to find a girlfriend and how hard it is for him to keep a girlfriend once he finds a girl. It's so difficult, Howard jokes, that the only way Raj could keep a girlfriend is if he kept her imprisoned somewhere. None of the other characters (or fans of the show) could possibly imagine Raj mistreating anybody. It's implying that he's desperate, not that he's violent or abusive.
