Context : Name of a machine found in metro station.

Hi,

I search for the name of a machine installed at most metro stations whose

doors will open only when you insert a valid metro ticket ?

I guess it starts with "S" but I don't know what it is.

Can somebody tell me about this word ?

Cheers

He didn't make a joke though. Turnstile is what I would call it, or maybe an entry gate. faregate, baffle gate are all names, but they are never used in the US.

You're right, no joke. I need to watch that. :)

Interestingly, many turnstiles are being replaced by baffle gates -- especially here in Hong Kong. But like many machines whose function or appearance has changed, they will probably be called turnstiles for many years to come. I know "icebox" (for refrigerator) held on for decades.

Baffle gates: First time I've ever heard it, but thanks to you I won't look so baffled if it ever comes up in conversation.
