'Maiden crossing' is unclear. Was it its maiden voyage and also a crossing, or did it have a maiden voyage (say around Britain) before it first attempted a crossing?

If maiden crossing was used, I would assume the vessel to be a ferryboat or something... a ship designed to cross rivers, channels, etc. :) Crossing an ocean ought to qualify as a voyage.

I agree, if it was specifically for crossings, like a cross-Channel ferry, then you could assume its maiden crossing was also its maiden voyage. The expression 'maiden crossing' could be used if it was clear.
