major settlement

Anybody know this juridic term "major settlement"?
It's the movie "Conviction" for someone in USA who made
20 years of prison unjustly. Anyway, her sister became a lawer
during those years and managed to prove his innocence.
At the end of the movie, it says,
" In July 2009, eight years after Kenny was proven innocent,
Betty Anne (his sister) won a major settlement against the Ayer Police department."
What exactly is "major settlement" here?
Simply a trial or something more or something less?

Thank you.

A major settlement is a lot of money (paid as a result of a legal verdict in your favor, in this case).
