make a point of making them feel welcome

“I want to welcome our freshmen to a new school, and our returning students to a fresh year. You might not have noticed that we have several new students joining our ranks. And because Colton is a community, I’m going to ask them to stand when I call their names, so that you can make a point of making them feel welcome here.”

Context: The person who is talking is the headmaster.

I know that “make a point of” means “treat something as important or essential,” but I'm not sure about this: does the headmaster want to say, the reason why I'm gointg to ask them to stand up is that I want all you returning students to know who these new students are, and you should attach importance to make them feel welcome?

Thank you!
