I doubt if tak off sounds as good as take flight in the above context. Thanks.

I'd think of revising the sentence and possibly say, "Huang enjoys thinking up new ways to make various kinds of kites flyable" or replace flyable with simply fly.

I agree, although 'Kites take flight' has a nice ring to it.
