Hello,

Can you find the definition of 'to' as used in the following sentence?

The top-up card enbales you to make phone calls to its value.

Can you find this sense in the dictionary?

I'd appreciate your help.

The top-up card enbales enables you to make phone calls to its value.
Hello.:) It sounds odd to me. Where did you find it? Was it written by a native speaker?

That said , I understand it to mean that if you top up the card with (say) ten pounds credit, you will be able to make phone calls for a total cost of no more than ten pounds, i.e. when you run out of credit.

Was your original source this definition of "top-up card" in the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, raymond?
a card that you buy for a mobile/cell phone so that you can make more calls to the value of the card
I'd say that "to", there, = " up to".

Edit: I suppose that's WR Random House definition 3:).

I suppose definition 3 in our on-site dictionary (the one Loob is referring to) is the closest: to.

That usage is a little awkward to my ear. I hear it as an elision of "up to".

Thanks, london. I can't seem to get the link to point to the Oxford Advance Learner's Dictionary, so I've now deleted it: better that than pointing to completely the wrong thing:rolleyes:.

So we have two votes for WordReference Random House definition 3:

WordReference Random House Learner's Dictionary of American English © 2015
    3. (used to express a limitation of movement or growth):
    He grew to six feet.
WordReference Random House Unabridged Dictionary of American English © 2015
    3. (used for expressing limit of movement or extension):
    He grew to six feet.

and one vote for definition 8 in the WordReference dictionary ~ presumably this definition 8:

WordReference Random House Learner's Dictionary of American English © 2015
    8. (used to express a limitation in degree or amount):
I was chilled to the bone.

I think that at base we agree: the idea in the original OALD sentence is "up to":).
