"Please make yourself abreast of the difference between equity and equality."
Kindly tell me if I can use the phrase make yourself abreast in the above sentence to mean that first get the difference between equity and equality clear.

To "keep abreast" is to continue to be informed about some situation that is changing, or may change may change. The difference between equity and equality is not something that is liable to change.

    I've never heard "make abreast"

Perhaps he is confusing "make a clean breast of things". But I agree "make abreast" really does not exist in American English.

You can get abreast of abreast of a situation. You might not know what you need to know but when you get abreast of it you catch up and reach the point where you understand what's going on. At that point it's your task to keep abreast of the situation.
