Making inquiries ... of/with mutual ones

Have you ever run into trouble when you needed to contact a friend whom you had long lost touch with? In the past, people didn't have any effective solutions to this problem. Making inquiries about this friend with mutual ones was the only thing that most people do.

The above is from an article titled "No Escape from the Web."
Is it the same to say "making inquiries about this friend of mutual ones?" Thanks.

    Hi Arueng,

Yes, I'd say it was. It means of course that you try to find out where your friend is by contacting mutual friends who may still be in contact with the friend you are seeking.
