Malato - Ammalato

    Sono malato - I am ill.

    Mi ammalato - I feel ill (reflessivo).

    I think ammalato is more 'falling ill' and is reflessivo (ammalarsi). But best wait for the fluent and native speakers' opinion.

    I think there would be no difference if you said:
    'sono malato' or 'sono ammalato',

    ammalarsi is the proper verb in this case (to fall ill, to be taken ill). As far as I know "malarsi" doesn't exist, so it would be incorrect. if you want to use malato to state that you are ill then say "essere malato".
