Mallora (island): pronunciation in BE

Senior Member
Hello! Can you tell me how you say "Mallorca" in BE? I'm referring to the Island. Thanks a lot in advance!

Most people say ma-yor-ka (reasonably close to Spanish pronunciation)

A few say ma-jor-ka (because of the alternative spelling: Majorca)

Probably [mə'jɔ:kə] is usual, that is like Madonna but with York instead of Don.

cross-posted I'm however one of those stick-in-the-muds who writes and says Majorca.

Well I never! I always thought Mallorca and Majorca were two different islands.

(Much like our - now thankfully ex - prime minister Tsipras, who seemed to think that Lesbos and Mytelene were two islands in the Dodecanese.)
