Marks purposefully on paper

This is in reference to a stage of writing developement in children.
Can I use "marca" for "marks"?

    Hello, if mark refers to a letter or number given by a teacher to show how good a student's work is [= grade American English] you can say: puntaje ó puntuación.

    this refers to a child who does not yet know how to write, attempting to make a mark on a piece of paper becuase he/she understands that this is a way that we communicate.
