2--Mary said her purse was lost.
3--Mary said she lost her purse.

Does the second sentence sound correct? Does it have to be 'Mary said her purse was missing' for that sense? Thank you.

    All three are correct, but the meanings are different.

    1--Mary said her purse was missing (perhaps lost, perhaps stolen, perhaps mislaid...?)
    2--Mary said her purse was lost (that's more explicit, but who lost it?).
    3--Mary said she lost her purse (ah! the mystery is made clear now).
