Mattress box

    Usually it's the mattress and the box spring (the sommier, as Missrapunzel correctly stated). It's rare to see the expression mattress box. Sometimes you see 'mattress/box spring' (sold together, as a set).

    Maybe your expression refers to the box that the mattress was delivered in? La boîte qui contenait le matelas?

    Actually I found this word in "In cold blood" by Truman Capote. He uses it talking about the murder : the murderers put "a mattress box" under one of the bodies... might be a "sommier", yes !
