meaning of the purification of the six sense organs

The following is extracted from a sermon by a Buddhist priest.

When we are able to correctly observe and perceive what comes through our eyes and ears, this is the meaning of the purification of the six sense organs.

Nichiren Daishonin states: “One must understand that to practise the teachings in accord with the Lotus Sutra is the purification of the six sense organs.”

I think the part in bold doesn't fit the preceding part of the sentence. Could someone please show me how to rephrase it?

    I wouldn't say it precisely that way, but I see nothing wrong with the priest's statement. Why do you want to rewrite it?
    As the part in bold is fine in relation to the preceding part of the sentence, I have nothing to add.
