meaning of "to be bard up"

New Member
Hello everyone!
As I was reading Thomas Dekker's "London, lying sicke of the Plague" I found this sentence:

What an unmatchable torment were it for a man to be bard up every night in a vast silent Charnell-house?

Could someone, please, explain what "to be bard up" means and, if possible, where this expression comes from? I've searched many dictionaries but have only found "bard" as a noun.
