    Me too, I have a problem with the italian expression meta turistica:
    How to translate it in the following context?:

    Il paese è diventato una meta turistica non solo per gli europei ma anche per gli americani.

    here is my attempt:

    The country has become a tourist destination not only for European people but also for Americans.

    Does anyone have a better suggestion?

    if you absolutely wanted to keep meta turistica you could say:

    This country has become a popular holiday destination not only for Europeans but for American too.

    but I prefer the "attracts visitors" version...
     
    I think both work, like byrne said, but my preference is for his version (This country has become a popular holiday destination not only for Europeans but for American too.)
    I think it flows better, the mention of 'tourist destination' makes me think of a guidebook, the crowds, it being on everyone's itinerary, whereas 'attracts visitors' brings up different (less vivid) images.

    Just a 100% complete personal opinion though...
