That sentence is wrong, probably by a foreigner.

imparare a fare qualcosa not imparare di fare qualcosa

I would translate it as:
it was my uncle that would teach me to train dogs.

It's also grammatically incorrect since no comma is needed.

Right on!!, it came from a Lebanese gentleman living in Italy...the translation makes sense now..
