Mi piace giocare sulla neve

I read something that said "Mi piace giocare sulla neve", meaning "I like to play in the snow". Is this correct and if so, what does "sulla" mean exactly? Why wouldn't it just be "Mi piace giocare nella neve"? Grazie

"mi piace giocare nella neve" would be funny to say:

I like to play staying inside the snow

I am confused. I wrote to a friend "abbiamo giocato sulla spiaggia"
and she laughed and explained that this meant we were UNDER the sand.
    giusto?

Not at all! I guess she was mocking you, for "sulla spiaggia" only means "on the beach"! ;)

if you are sure you told "abbiamo giocato sulla spiaggia/sabbia" your friend should have smoked something strong if she laughed!!!

    if you say
    abbiamo giocato nella sabbia
then you are supposed to be under the sand and that can make her laugh.
