"They have other things to think about, but you may well be right. Mile. Peret thinks there is a physicist on the way. If so, he should be able to prevent any more tragic accidents."
These sentences are from J.G. Ballard's The Cyrstal World, again. What is the meaning of "Mile." in this sentence. I couldn't find it in any dictionary. Our heros are on the way, could it mean "it's a long way".

    I suspect it is a poorly punctuated translation. Another transcript shows it as below, and "Mile Peret" is the full name:

    They have other things to think about, but you may well be right. Mile Peret thinks there is a physicist on the way

    Mile. is an alternative abbreviation of Mademoiselle. Unfortunately, our dictionary does not list it under this spelling, but it is given as an alternative spelling of Mlle (with two 'll's).

    It is French, but adopted into English when used to describe a French woman.
