About the context: it's part of diary about a trip along a river by Kayak.

I don't have a clue about the meaning of this sentence, I would appreciate any suggestion!

Yes, it means a job that you need to do, as you speak.
For example, I'm not really focusing on the job at hand because I'm answering questions in WR.
