Hi,

In the following phrases, which is correct?
mistake A for B;
mistake A as B.

For instance, I pronounced ax as the letter x. Can I say "I mistook ax for x"? Can I say "I mistook ax as x"?

Thank you very much.

    I would use "mistook...for" and "misread...as". Since the mistake might well be a misreading, I would not be particularly surprised to hear someone mix up the two expressions and use "mistook...as", but I don't think it is correct English.
