Montmartre as an "artists' abode"

Senior Member

Can I describe Montmartre as an "artists' abode" or is abode restricted to a residence? If "abode" doesn't work, how should I express this idea that it was not only the meeting place of artists, but also the place where the important artists lived in the first years of the twentieth century?

Thank you!

I don't think "abode" works: that's someone's place of residence.

I'd call it "the artists' quarter". :)
