mostly avoiding getting bitten

Does "mostly avoiding getting bitten" mean "in order not to get bitten by snakes in many cases"? Here is its context:
The thing is, in the African bush, it’s not so much the people that you worry about, but the other possible occupants of the outhouse. The dogs are great at catching snakes, mostly avoiding getting bitten. Lou’s dog was bitten by a viper once – quite a close call – but he made it through.

Many thanks!
