Hello

Why can in the following sentence 'fitted' be replaced with 'mounted' but not with 'assembled'?

The company has fitted a small chip with a thermometer to the side of each blood bag that wirelessly transmits records of the bag's temperature history to a nearby computer.

  • Hi
"assembled" usually involves many parts which are disigned to be assmbled to make a larger unit.
"Fitted to" can involve one part only which may have other uses elsewhere.
"a phone is fitted to the wall"

Fitted is just the right word, for me.
Mounted or attached suggest something a little optional, an add-on to the blood back.
    Assembled just sounds wrong.
As I understand this, the chip is an integral part of the new pack design and construction.

Interesting thread. One difficulty, for me, with fitted is that it suggests two or more things which are suitable for bringing together in order to make one thing - which may be different and perform a different function to the two or more things when they are individual items. In this respect fitted is very close to assembled.

To mount or attach does indeed suggest something which can be optional. It can also be just one thing which is connected to another, and therefore can perform a completely separate function, which something fitted or assembled cannot.

trying to think of a suitable example of the difference I am suggesting is very difficult, however. :) Do you assemble, fit, mount or attach a car radio?

I think "fitted ... with" here is intended in the sense of "equipped ... with", which is definition 6 here (although definition 4, to make suitable or adapt, is a possible candidate, too). In that case, the meaning is different from "assembled".
