Houdini moved on to other types of escapes. He escaped from straitjackets while hanging upside-down yards off the ground, and from padlocked crates thrown into rivers.

Do you mean "moved on to" is the same thing as "went on to" ?? If so, yes it does. You could use either phrase. Does this help ?
