Nationality as a pronoun

Hi everyone! I was wondering if it is possible to use a nationality as a pronoun, so as to avoid repetition. This is the example:

I like the American accent, but I prefer the Australian and British ones.

My proposal:
I like the American accent, but I prefer the Australian and the British.

    It doesn't really work for me without "ones": I think it sounds a bit odd. It has me wanting to ask ' The Australian and the British what?'
