needed to 'scald back' [scale]

< Previous | Next >
  • This is a conversation about an old job.
    It goes like this:

-You said you worked for my husband?-
-Oh, a long time ago. I don’t think he remembers me.-
-Oh, I think he remembers you.-
    - Wow! Well he let a bunch of us go out at once, ‘cause… You know, he needed to scald back.

I'm not really sure if thats what this persons says, I can't understand it, but in the subtitles in spanish it says " he needed to go back"

    Thank you!

It is a long shot but I think it can only be 'scale back'. Eg. He had let a lot of workers go (dismissed them) ... because he needed to scale back. That means he needed to reduce his work force sometime in the past.
