I know that Nicaraguans and Costa Ricans use the terms "nica" and "tico" to refer to themselves as a form of pride in relating to their country. I've been told conflicting things, though, about foreigners using these terms. Is it appropriate for people not from those countries to use those terms in referring to Nicaraguans and Costa Ricans, and when would that be taken as offensive?

  2. From my limited experience, it is not necesarily offensive. For example: "He speaks like a southerner." merely conveys information about the person and is not meant to be derrogatory. Espero que esto le ayude. Alberto
