Hi,

Mr Son has cultivated an eccentric persona by making dramatic predictions about how technology will change the world and insisting his firm will last 300 years. But SoftBank is no curiosity. After a long expansion binge it is the world’s fifth-most-indebted non-financial firm, ....

How should I read "SoftBank is no curiosity."? Softbank and curiosity is not equivalent, so this sentence must be contracted from a full, fluent sentence, I guess.

But SoftBank is no curiosity. - But SoftBank is not a curiosity.

The construction "but X is no Y" introduces a contrast and is usually followed by what X actually is.
