Hi,
Is "solid evidence" in the above equivalent to "solid proof?" Thanks.

    Proof and solid evidence mean the same to me in this context.

    The meaning can be read as:
    They couldn't prove conclusively that he commited the crime; they had no solid proof (but may have had evidence that was not solid).

    Evidence (which is not solid) is not the same as proof.
