no thanks can be offensive?

An American lady asked me if I would like her to take our picture. I smiled and politely said "no thanks". My companions told me that I should have said "yes, please" because she might have been offended. Do you agree with them? If so, how do you politely refuse a kind offer like that without offending the other person?

    I doubt she got offended. If you wanted to be... more 'gentle', you could maybe have said "No I'll be fine, thank you very much though."

    Are your companions American or also from your country?

    "I'd rather you didn't" is a very polite way of saying "no" in this situation. I agree with the others. You don't need to say "yes" to having your picture taken unless you want to have your picture taken.
