Not spread thin on halloween.

    Bonsoir,

    Je suis en train de regarder une série en vo, et il y a cette phrase que je ne comprend pas, le contexte, ils parlent d'une quarataine de site à vérifier pour y trouver un tueur, et le flic dit : No. No way the police can hit all those. Not spread thin on halloween..

    Si quelqu'un peut éclairer ma lanterne, merci

    The writer has eliminated words that would make it more clear: There is no way that the police can go to all of those locations because they are spread thinly on Halloween. There are not enough of them, and they are even more busy because of the large number of troublemakers active on that night.

    Just in case the idiom is still unclear, to spread thinly is like when you do not have enough confiture/jam to cover a complete piece of bread. You have to spread it thinly to cover the entire slice, but that may not be enough to give it sufficient flavour.

    Ah ok, merci donc, donc en fait, ça veut dire qu'ils ne sont pas assez nombreux avec halloween.

    Oui, c'est ça. Normalement ils sont assez nombreux (mais on peut discuter ça!), mais pas cette nuit là parce-que il y a plus de besoin de leurs services.
