Tenemos muchas ganas de visitaros otra vez, ójala en el año que venga.
The last part, "hopefully next year", ¿es correcto, o no? A mí, el subjuntivo "venga" suena un poco raro. :mad:

    Yes. 'hopefully next year' is the translation. 'venga' is the present subjunctive form of venir (to come). The subjunctive is a mood that conveys a sense of doubt or uncertainty about something.

    e.g.
    estoy en la estación, esperando que llegue mi tren=I'm at the station, waiting for my train to arrive
    'llegue' is a present subjunctive form of llegar, conveying doubt that the train may not arrive (not uncommon in the UK!).

    I would say : " ojalá el año que viene" (hopefully next year)

    There is uncertainty as whether we (nosotros tenemos) will visit next year; but " el año que viene" is arriving for sure, no doubt about it.
    "viene" refers to the year , no to (nosotros) tenemos.

    I would use the subjunctive form (venga) in the following case:

    "Espero que (tú) vengas el año que viene". In this case we are not sure if he will come next year; therefore, we use the subjunctive form.

    Claro, se puede decir de esta manera, pero entonces no podemos explicar lo del subjuntivo. Al poner " tal vez el año próximo" , se acaba el problema.

    Thanks. I'm quite comfortable with the subjunctive, and I thought "ojalá" always took the subjunctive, but my gut feeling was, it did not sound right in this case.
    :confused: " tal vez el año próximo" will get me out of a hole, just wondered whether the original was grammaticallt correct or not.

    You are not as wrong as you think with your understanding of the subjunctive.
    In this case, the "ojalá "does not refer to venir/venga, it refers to "visitaros".

    "Tenemos muchas ganas de visitaros otra vez, ojalá el año que viene"

    "viene" in this case means "next" or "coming year".


    I think this is what you are thinking:

    "Tengo ganas de verte, ojalá (tú) vengas el año que viene"

    "I wish to see you, hopefully next year"

    There is your subjunctive: vengas

    I wrote this sentence to get my point across. You can always say "el año próximo".

    I hope I did not cause more confusion
