on the day of the evening...

Dear friends
I hope this is not too naive a question to ask but I'm a little bit confused about the meaning of the underlined sentence, taken from ''Newsreel XXVII'', "1919" by Dos Passos:
Location: France
They staged a show for the American troops from a flatcar base of a large naval gun three kilometers behind the line on the day of the evening of the drive at Chateau Thierry.
Does it mean that the drive and the show took place at the same day only the drive started at the evening?
