Can you please check the sentence below and tell me whether the use of "on the occasion of" is correct? The sentence is mine.

With the declaration of martial law in December 1978 on the occasion of the Kahramanmaraş Massacre, in which more than a hundred people were massacred, the military was beginning to share in the regime.

    If martial law was declared in response to the Kahramanmaraş Massacre, your use of on the occasion of seems normal to me. If the massacre occurred as a result of that declaration, your use of the phrase seems confusing to me.
