    I know we can say "On the one hand..., on the other hand", but can we say "on the one side..., on the other side"

    No, you can't I'm afraid. It would have to be "On one side ... on the other", sounds a bit woolly, though. So you better stick to "On the one hand..., on the other hand".

    I've had a lot of French students using this lately, and some insisting that they've "heard it before". I think it sounds like they're translating from the French: D'un coté. I agree with the Native Speakers above: Better to say: "On the one hand..., on the other hand".
