Origin of -ote suffix in Spanish

    Literature and the Web readdress to French (where it is Occitan) and Catalan. The suffix is both augmentative and diminutive. The source should have been *-ottis~-ottus or *-uttis~-uttus. Latin doesn’t seem to have any candidate, but Romance has a number of such emphatic suffixes with long consonants: either newly created or of substrate origin.
