ornée d'arêtes courtes

The word 'arrêtes' as it is written in my text doesn't appear either in WR or in my Larousse. Help! The sentence, which describes the proboscis of an insect, is as follows:

"qui ressemble fort à une colonne vertebrale de poisson ornée d'arrêtes courtes et inclinées vers l'arrière...."

The rest is easy, but I'm struggling to translate what "short ???" it might be embellished with. I'm imagining short hooks, which would fit the sense. Or short spikes? But if there's anyone out there who knows for definite what "une arrête" is, I would be grateful for any help.

Thanks.

Ah ok - so now I look stupid, but honestly, this text has been published with two 'r's. Thanks very much!!
