Buongiorno a tutti.
L'autore del romanzo che sto traducendo (americano, contemporaneo) sta descrivendo il passato di uno dei protagonisti che, rimasto orfano, viene dato in affido a diverse famiglie fino a che non viene adottato da una di queste.

"He ran through three sets of foster families, some neglectful, others simply overwrought with the best of intentions."

Cosa vuol dire in questo caso "overwrought with the best of intentions"?

A senso, mi verrebbe da tradurre :"... animate dalle migliori intenzioni"... ma il senso dell'originale è negativo, mentre la mia traduzione lascia pensare a qualcosa di positivo...

"Overwrought" significa anche "agitato / nervoso / in tensione". Per me questo sarebbe il senso negativo, cioè "in agitazione / in nervosismo per le migliori intenzioni".

Allora penso che "soffocanti" possa essere la traduzione giusta, perché dei gentori iperprotettivi possono esserlo.

'Overwrought' in that sentence simply means stressed out, in my opinion. The foster parents had good intentions as far as caring for the child, but found doing what was best for the child too stressful.
